In 1732 King George granted a charter allowing James Oglethorpe and the trustees to establish the colony of Georgia. Oglethorpe’s plan was to create a home for the many debtors incarcerated in the London jails. Great Britain hoped the colony would provide a defensive buffer for their other holdings from the Spanish, French, Native Americans and to provide more riches.
